Pidgin : Unable to retrieve MSN address list

12 Jan

From this morning pidgin wasn’t able to connect to the microsoft servers to get the contact list. A quick lookup gave me plenty of results. The fix is real easy.

First, close pidgin. Make sure it is closed by checking your system tray (or whatever that is called in gnome).
Then install msn-pecan

1
sudo apt-get install msn-pecan

Now boot up pidgin again, and change your account from MSN to WLM. Now reactivate your account and your buddy list should load fine.

New Ubuntu installation

8 Aug

Because i’ve read alot of good things about Ubuntu 6.06 TLS (codenamed Dapper Drake), i decided to give it a go this week. After seeing the movies (here, here and here) of the eyecandy (Compiz & XGL) i couldn’t wait to get it up & running to start drooling over my new & shiny laptop. I included some movies so you can see what i am talking about :

[gv data="IWQL56pMUSA"][/gv]

Update: after working with Compiz/XGL for a while, i’ve noticed there are still some major flaws/features missing, the ones i miss the most at this moment are :

  • saving state/position/size of a window
  • some windows suddenly dissappear without further notice, i can restore em by killing them and starting them again

I’ll post some more thoughts pretty soon…

EDIT : Because i got some negative e-mails, i want to point out (just to be clear), that the flaws in compiz/XGL do not have anything todo with Ubuntu Dapper release itself, i found this debian based distribution very easy to install, flawless and self-explanatory…

Installing Ubuntu

30 Dec

This is not my first time installing non-windows OS’s so it should go pretty good, and as Ubuntu has the most ‘user-friendly’ installation setup, i am pretty confident that it will install without too much hassle.

After installing the ubuntu cd (Ubuntu 5.10 “The Breezy Badger”) i put it in the laptop and made sure i had some free unpartitioned space (next to my current 2 partitions). Because i want to keep my current WindowsXP installation (i need outlook/exchange for work), i want to start with a dual-boot setup. The cd boots fine, and the installation wizard explains itself, the guys over at Ubuntu really did their best providing you with as less questions as possible and that turns out as a good experience for a first-timer.

The installation setup asks me if i want him to install grub (a bootmanager) to give the user(me) the choice which operating to boot up when you start it, which i agreed on. After the first reboot i noticed the installation also added my old “Windows XP” (on another partition) as a boot option….thats what they call flawless !
