Installing Ubuntu

30 Dec

This is not my first time installing non-windows OS’s so it should go pretty good, and as Ubuntu has the most ‘user-friendly’ installation setup, i am pretty confident that it will install without too much hassle.

After installing the ubuntu cd (Ubuntu 5.10 “The Breezy Badger”) i put it in the laptop and made sure i had some free unpartitioned space (next to my current 2 partitions). Because i want to keep my current WindowsXP installation (i need outlook/exchange for work), i want to start with a dual-boot setup. The cd boots fine, and the installation wizard explains itself, the guys over at Ubuntu really did their best providing you with as less questions as possible and that turns out as a good experience for a first-timer.

The installation setup asks me if i want him to install grub (a bootmanager) to give the user(me) the choice which operating to boot up when you start it, which i agreed on. After the first reboot i noticed the installation also added my old “Windows XP” (on another partition) as a boot option….thats what they call flawless !

My working environment (software)

29 Dec

I deciced to optimise my working environment, i am tired of having to format my disk every 2 months because things get slow….Just untill now i was a Windows user, i think all Microsofts operating systems passed on my computer….from ms-dos to windowsXp. And in my 10 years of computer user i formatted my machine at least 100 times….but i’m tired of it…

My current software environment :

  • Microsoft WindowsXP (sp2)
  • Microsoft OfficeXP
  • Openoffice 2.0
  • Zend IDE 5.0 (coding environment)
  • Wamp (Apache1.x, Mysql 4.x, Php5.x)
  • Email : Outlook (work / exchange) & Thunderbird (company / personal)
  • Mozilla Firefox (browser)

The future vision :

  • Ubuntu (a debian/linux based operating system)
  • LAMP (Apache1.x, Mysql 4.x, Php5.x)
  • Openoffice 2.x
  • Mozilla thunderbird : email
  • VMware : WindowsXP / Microsoft Office (exchange)

So lets start by installing ubuntu, and then go on from there

K2 Beta One for WordPress 2.0

28 Dec

As i told you in my previous post, i updated the blog to wordpress 2.0 (new features), which is now available for public on wordpress.com. Slowly the first wp 2.0 themes & plugins are popping up and because i am too lazy (and don’t have time) to write my own plugins / themes, i am always curious to test them out…

Digg told me that K2 is coming out for WP2.0, thats why i decided to give it a go, you can see the result here :)

About me

27 Dec

I am a 25 year old IT consultant from Belgium, Leuven. Since August 2006 i work as a fulltime web developer in my own company. At this moment my company exists of 3 people ( 2 fulltimers ), and business is doing very good as we have plenty of projects. We mainly focus on database driven applications for .eu companies, institutions & organisations.

Now on the personal record : Most of my evenings are filled with work, and in the spare time that i have left, i always have to start by cleaning the mess i made when i was in a rush to get somewhere (clothes on the floor, mess everywhere, …). Besides that i try to have a good time with my friends, going out, watching movies, drinking & playing games. My girlfriend tells me i am a gadget freak, but i do not completely agree.

I’ll try to integrate a portfolio sometime soon…
